Healthcare Policies, Debates & Christina Hoff Sommers
October 31, 2016

Picture

Hello everyone! We wish you a happy Halloween. Election Day is less than ten days away, and the future of the country looks frightening indeed. In the meantime, please enjoy the following events on campus... if you dare.

The next general body meeting is scheduled for 8pm on Wednesday, November 2nd, in Hamilton 304. The topic of the meeting will be healthcare. Healthcare spending in the United States has been steadily increasing since the 1960s. Between 1960 and 2014, healthcare spending increased from an inflation-adjusted average of $1,176/person per year to $9,544 (by 8 times). In the same period of time, the portion of healthcare expenses paid by third parties have increased from 52% to 89%. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was supposed to have greatly expanded insurance coverage, but 11% percent of the population remains uninsured. How can we control healthcare costs while maintaining a high standard of care? And what role, if any, should the government play in healthcare? Come join us and share your thoughts over warm pizza.

Additionally, tomorrow, November 1st, American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers will be joining us on campus to speak about the issues of hypersensitivity and censorship on campus. Academic freedom and freedom of expression form the crucial foundations of liberal education. However, these freedoms are slowly being eroded by political correctness and a culture of victimhood. Sommers will be speaking to us about this worrying trend in Victims, Victims Everywhere: Trigger Warnings, Liberty, and the Academy. The event is scheduled for 7-8:30pm, and there will be a question and answer session at the end. For more information about the event, please check out the following link: https://www.facebook.com/events/650074508503136/

Furthermore, this Tuesday, November 1st, all political groups on campus will be gathering to debate key election issues. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to hear the positions of the two main parties as well as smaller third parties. The debate will start at 8pm, but the location is still to be decided. Please check our Facebook page later today for the specific lcoation.

We hope to see you there!

About the Columbia University Libertarians

We are a non-partisan group that believes in the Libertarian principals of individual liberty, limitations on government intervention, and free markets. Here at CUL, we seek to identify and evaluate the implications of our philosophy of freedom in our rapidly changing, modern world, where overarching principal of liberty takes on more nuanced applications in practice. Members hold a wide range of thought on today's core issues, and we seek to expand upon these opinions in our meetings. We hope you will join us and participate in lively discussions!
