Gun Control & Students for Liberty Regional Conference
October 24, 2016

Picture

Over the weekend, the Columbia football team took Dartmouth head-on and defeated them 9-7. Our team has finally broken the losing streak to Dartmouth, and we hope for more victories to come. Roar, Lion, Roar!

Our next general body meeting is scheduled for 8pm onWednesday, October 26th, in Hamilton 304. The topic of the meeting will be gun control. Americans own 265 million guns - more than one gun for every adult. However, only 37% percent of households own firearms; 133 million guns are owned by 3% of American adults, who possess an average of 17 guns each. The CDC estimates that there were 33,636 deaths due to "injury by firearms" in 2013. Supporters of gun control use these statistics to push for more gun control, while opponents claim that guns help deter crime and secure individual liberties. Should guns be more strictly controlled? And how can we reduce gun violence while maintaining the right to bear arms? Join us and share your thoughts over warm pizza!

Additionally, on Saturday, October 29th, Students for Liberty will be hosting regional conferences on key election issues. The New York Regional Conference will be held at New York University. Speakers at the conference include Forbes 30 Under 30's Liya Palagashvili, economist Steve Horwitz, Free the People's Matt Kibbe and Lou Perez of We the Internet TV. There will also be a film festival and a SDP Know Your Rights event.

If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please check out the link: http://www.sflrcs.org/conference/nyc-2/. The event is free, but registration is required.

We hope to see you there!

About the Columbia University Libertarians

We are a non-partisan group that believes in the Libertarian principals of individual liberty, limitations on government intervention, and free markets. Here at CUL, we seek to identify and evaluate the implications of our philosophy of freedom in our rapidly changing, modern world, where overarching principal of liberty takes on more nuanced applications in practice. Members hold a wide range of thought on today's core issues, and we seek to expand upon these opinions in our meetings. We hope you will join us and participate in lively discussions!
